Stefan Mărușter

Emeritus Professor

Founder of the School of Computer Science - UVT

In memoriam - Prof. Dr. Ștefan Mărușter

Professor MĂRUȘTER’s entire professional and scientific activity covers areas of Mathematics and Computer Science. He studied Mathematics at the Faculty of Mathematics-Physics of the University of Timisoara from 1956-1960, after which he became a high school mathematics teacher (Baia Mare, 1960-1965). Between 1965 and 1972 he worked at the Computing Centre of the Traian Vuia Polytechnic Institute in Timișoara, being a member of the group that designed, developed and programmed the MECIPT-1 computer, as a mathematician and then as a scientific researcher. In 1974, under the guidance of Acad. D.D. Stancu, PhD thesis in Mathematics with the title Numerical methods for monotone operator equations, being the first PhD of Professor D.D. Stancu. Since 1972, Professor Mărușter has been a teacher at the University of Timișoara (lecturer until 1981, lecturer from 1981-1991, professor since 1991).

Professor MĂRUȘTER is rightly considered the founder of the School of Computer Science at the West University of Timișoara. Under his guidance grew some of today’s personalities of the Department of Computer Science at UVT: Prof. Dr. Dana Petcu, Prof. Dr. Daniela Zaharie, Prof. Dr. Viorel Negru, Prof. Dr. Tudor Jebelean. Since the beginning of his scientific career (MECIPT-1 period), he has advocated locally and nationally for the establishment of academic computer science programmes in universities. Professor MĂRUȘTER builds on his experience from the MECIPT-1 project, teaching core courses at the newly established Computer Science Department of the West University of Timisoara: Operating Systems, Computer Architecture, Programming Languages, Numerical Computation, and later Computational Mathematics, Nonlinear Equations, Nonlinear Optimization, Parallel and Distributed Computation in Numerical Methods, Research Methodology.

At the University of Timisoara he leads the research group in computer science, and in 1979 he contributes to the establishment of the Computing Centre of the University, being appointed director. In all four of our country’s traditional universities, computing centres have been nurseries for computer science departments. In 1990, he was elected Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science. He has also held positions as Head of Department (1992 – 1996) and Director of the Doctoral School of Computer Science (2005 – 2008). He holds PhDs in

Computer Science since 1992, supervising (directly or as co-supervisor) the completion of more than 20 PhD theses. Today, Dr. Ștefan MĂRUȘTER is Professor Emeritus at the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, West University of Timisoara (UVT).
