About the Faculty of Informatics

The Faculty of Mathematics was established in 1948 as a component part of the Pedagogical Institute of Timișoara, under the name of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics. In 1952, the Mathematics-Physics department was created, and in 1960 – the Geometry department.

On October 16, 1962, the decision was made to transform the Pedagogical Institute into the University of Timisoara. A Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics was created within the University with the following specializations: Geometry, Mathematical Analysis and Mathematics and Physics. An important moment is the establishment within the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics, in 1971, of the Computer Science section.

In 1974, the Faculty of Mathematics-Mechanics and the Faculties of Physics, Biology and Physical Education were merged into a Faculty of Natural Sciences, which existed until 1990.

In 1990 the Faculty of Natural Sciences was divided into the Faculty of Mathematics and the Faculty of Physics.

Starting with 2004, the Faculty of Mathematics changed its name to the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics.

Over the years, the following specializations have operated within the faculty.

Mathematics and Computer Science are priority fields of study that have led to the extraordinary technical development of our civilization. Our faculty is committed to providing its students with:

  • The possibility of becoming specialists in both fields;
  • Modern, high-quality academic programs at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels;
  • Access to state-of-the-art equipment and excellent study and research conditions.

The academic community in our faculty is dedicated to strengthening the prestige of UVT and the Romanian university school.

Since October 2005, in accordance with the Bologna Convention, higher education has been organized into cycles (3 years cycle I – bachelor's degree; 2 years cycle II – master's degree; 3 years cycle III – doctorate). The credit transfer system (ECTS) has been in operation since 1997.

Starting with October 2025, the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science becomes the Faculty of Computer Science, and the Faculty of Physics becomes the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics.
